Partners in Recovery, Supporters of the Community
An invitation to your company and its employees to take part in a rehabilitation programme for people living with psychological trauma.
Every one of us can give something of ourselves to make this a better place to live, and a more compassionate one. The number of people who have been left with psychological injuries by this war is larger than any single institution can care for on its own. So the useful question is not only what the state should be doing for them, but what each of us can do for the society we say we want to live in.
You can support a full crew of eight, or fund two or three places within one.
Breaking Waves is a registered Israeli non-profit that works with soldiers, reserve soldiers and civilians whose mental health has been affected by the Swords of Iron war and by earlier conflicts and security incidents. We work at sea because a boat offers something a treatment room cannot. It is a shared, demanding, contained environment in which a person has to function, depend on others and be depended upon in return. Our vessel is large and comfortable enough to serve as a home on the water: a place that takes people as they are and helps them rebuild a workable daily life alongside the trauma, rather than waiting for the trauma to disappear first.
Supporting a Crew
How it works?
- Each crew is eight people who go through a structured post-trauma rehabilitation programme together, as a group, from the first sail to the last.
- Each crew sails four hours a week, accompanied throughout by mentors, sailing staff and qualified emotional support professionals.
- The full annual cost of running one crew, covering training, staffing and infrastructure as well as a week-long retreat in the Mediterranean, is NIS 170,000 (approximately US $57,000).
- Companies are invited to take part by funding a crew for a year.
What the partnership looks like in practice?
- This is not a sponsorship logo on a website. Companies that join us take an active part in the programme.
- On the water. Employees with sailing experience who want to be involved can join the support crew alongside participants. The crew sails under your company branding.
- On dry land. Your employees help participants find their footing again in ordinary working life and get past the obstacles that most often hold that recovery back: writing a CV, preparing for job interviews, dealing with government agencies, public institutions and banks. Small things count too, such as a word of encouragement, or a holiday gift sent to a participant exactly as it would be to any other member of staff. The aim is a real sense of belonging, not a gesture with nothing behind it.
Many employees at large Israeli companies have served long periods of reserve duty during this war, and a good number are still serving. It is reasonable to assume that some of them have been exposed to events with genuine traumatic potential.
We are therefore open to discussing with company management the option of opening our programme to a crew made up of the company’s own employees, running as a full year of activity. Such a partnership would also include support for the employees who take part as crew members, on the same terms as any other supported crew. Participants would be asked to commit to one continuous year. Recovery depends on consistency, and consistency depends on commitment.
